Questions and Answers about band
at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy

Do I have to know anything about music to join band?

NO! Everything you need to know to play an instrument will be taught in your band class. No previous training is required.

If I join band, will I still have time for other activities?

YES! We encourage students to participate in many outside activities! We have students in the band that are active in club sports and other school clubs and athletics.

What fun things will we do in band?

Besides learning how to play an instrument for your own pleasure and earning medals, we like to recognize our students for their hard work and dedication. We like to have fun in band, for example: Performing at Disney World, pizza parties, dances, gift exchanges and more!

What performance opportunities will I have?

Sixth Graders will perform at the Winter and Spring Concerts. You will also have the chance to earn medals by performing at the Solo and Ensemble festival in the spring. In addition, Seventh and Eight Graders selected for Honor Band perform at Music Performance Assessment in March. Can I take two electives next year?

Sixth grade students are only allowed to take one elective.  In Band, you will have the opportunity to excel in music by studying an instrument for an entire year, and for many years to come. Band offers you the chance to belong to a very special team, and on THIS team, EVERYONE plays!!!!

I don’t know which instrument to play, will someone help me decide?

We will meet with you and your parents after you have registered and chosen band as your first choice elective. At this time, we will help you select the instrument that will best suit you. Because of your physical characteristics, you might progress faster on one instrument than you would on another. We will offer you the best advice possible in your instrument selection.  If you have an instrument that has been in the family, bring it with you to your interview.

What will the band director look for in my instrument selection?

The director will look for a good attitude, a desire to be in band, and a willingness to work and have fun. We also look at teeth and mouth formation, hand and finger coordination, and the band’s instrumentation needs.

I want to play in the band. How do I get an instrument?

Most parents rent an instrument with the option to buy or upgrade at a later date. Carlton’s Music is one of the music instrument companies in our area that will have instruments available for rental and is able to work to provide you with exactly what you need.  Buying a cheaply made instrument will cost more in the long run.  Please do not purchase an instrument before checking with the Band Director!

Does it cost a lot of money to be in band?

The main cost is the cost of your instrument. Good new and used instruments are available from most music stores. Most students rent an instrument on a rental /purchase plan at a fairly low, monthly rate. The  School Board also provides the more expensive instruments to the students for a yearly maintenance fee.

Make sure you provide your child with a quality instrument
